Inside the Mind - Benjamin Cole

  • What inspired you to write children’s fantasy?
I grew up loving stories where ordinary kids stumbled into magical worlds, and I wanted to create my own.
  • Where do your ideas come from?
From daydreams—sometimes a single “what if” question becomes the seed for a whole book.
  • Who’s your favorite character you’ve created?
A talking fox named Ember. He’s clever, mischievous, and always saves the day in unexpected ways.
  • Do you follow a strict writing routine?
I try to write at least one page a day, even when inspiration feels far away.
  • Which books influenced you as a child?
Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia. They made me believe magic could exist anywhere.
  • Do you test your stories with young readers?
Yes, I give early drafts to a few eager readers—they always catch details I miss.
  • What’s the biggest challenge in writing fantasy for kids?
Building a believable world without overwhelming readers with too many details.
  • How do you keep young readers hooked?
By ending chapters with surprises—kids love the thrill of “what happens next?”
  • What advice do you give to young writers?
Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run wild—no idea is too strange.
  • What’s next for you?
A new series about a hidden kingdom under the ocean, filled with magical sea creatures.
